March Ramblers Retreat
with Alex Polizzi
Join Alex Polizzi for a two night Ramblers Retreat at The Star on 17 March. Guests will arrive on Tuesday, in time for cream tea with Alex, followed by a short circular walk to Berwick Church (2.5 miles including a hill!) to see the murals painted by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. Guests will then return to The Star for dinner.
The following day, the group will drive to Exceat for the start of a long largely coastal circular walk (approximately 8 miles), over the stunning, and steep, Seven Sisters, then down to the pretty village of East Dean for lunch, returning via Friston Forest.
Alex will host a group dinner on the Wednesday night for those who wish to join her. Departure will be on the Thursday morning, at which point we recommend you explore the pretty village of Alfriston.
In 1941, during the Second World War, Bishop Bell of Chichester commissioned the Bloomsbury artists Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and her son Quentin Bell, to decorate the interior of the small rural church of St Michael & All Angels, Berwick. This was the first time that contemporary artists of repute had been allowed to completely decorate the interior of an historic country church. Bishop Bell hoped it would bring about a revival of the commissioning of artists by churches.
