Painting Workshop
with Jo Starkey

Location The Star
Date Mon, 5 Oct

Join contemporary landscape artist Jo Starkey for an inspiring and immersive day exploring the expressive techniques she uses in her own professional painting practice.

Meadow Alchemy is a process-led workshop that celebrates the beauty of wildflower meadows through colour, texture and expressive mark-making. Working with acrylics on board, you’ll discover how simple layered techniques can create atmospheric, contemporary landscapes full of depth and movement.

Throughout the day you’ll be guided step by step as you build your painting using a variety of exciting techniques, including paint rolling, dripping, spattering and richly textured sculpted impasto flowers. Every stage is demonstrated in a relaxed and supportive way, giving you the confidence to experiment and develop your own interpretation.

Your painting will be created on a 25cm x 25cm MDF board, a beautifully responsive surface that’s perfect for layered acrylic techniques and ideal for framing afterwards.

With Jo’s guidance, you’ll gain an understanding of the materials and processes she uses in her own artwork while creating a finished painting to take home and enjoy.

The workshop is suitable for all abilities, from complete beginners to those with painting experience. With plenty of individual tuition throughout the day, you’ll leave feeling inspired, more confident in your creativity, and equipped with techniques you can continue exploring at home.

Jo Starkey is a contemporary landscape and floral artist based in Ditchling, East Sussex. An established artist, her work has been exhibited, published and collected throughout the UK and internationally.

Inspired by the ever-changing light and atmosphere of the English countryside, Jo’s work explores two distinct yet complementary styles. Her organic landscape paintings capture depth, movement and the fleeting qualities of light, while her expressive meadow and floral paintings celebrate colour, texture and surface through intuitive mark-making and subtle metallic highlights.

Working primarily in acrylics and mixed media, Jo builds each painting through a layered, process-led approach that creates richness, atmosphere and depth. Her landscapes evoke a sense of calm and connection with nature, while her more expressive work has a contemporary, vibrant energy.

Alongside her studio practice, Jo runs highly regarded painting workshops from her Sussex studio and at guest venues, sharing the techniques and creative processes she uses in her own work. Her workshops are known for their relaxed, supportive atmosphere, encouraging participants of all abilities to explore their creativity and leave with a painting they’re proud to take home.
